Week 17. Pets – 52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History

I have had pets for most of my life and both sets of grandparents had pets when I was a child.  Both sets of grandparents in fact had Chihuahuas!  My dad’s parents had a which Chihuahua called Tiger that I have written of before that they kept until he was very old and very ill and had to be euthanized.  My mom’s parents had a Chihuahua called Tiny that lived in the back yard in a little dog house that I jumped off of spraining my ankle when I was about 5 years old.

My first pet that I remember well was a Siamese cat named Sammy.  She was a beautiful cat who ruled our household for many years!  My funniest memory of her is one weekend when we lived in Green Forest and my mom’s parents came to visit.  Grandma was in the living room and was very surprised when the ceramic cat on top of the TV suddenly got up and jumped from the TV!  Grandma Treat screamed in surprise and Mom came running into the room to find out what was wrong!  Sammy was just looking around like she was wondering what all the noise was about and by that time Grandma was feeling a little silly.  Sammy loved to curl up on the TV for hours at a time but she was also a very affectionate cat!  We had her for over ten years until she got feline leukemia and died.  I still think about her often.

We also had a few hamsters and fish when we were kids.  My hamster would continually get out of his cage and we would come in and find Sammy on top of the cage looking around and meowing at us like she was saying would you please get that overgrown mouse back in his cage!!

Later, when I was a teenager, we had just gotten a cute little yellow and white Manx  kitten when Dad stopped to go into Radio Shack on Sunset in Springdale.  I went into the pet store next door to get something for our fish tank and found this beautiful Siamese cat roaming the store.  She was so beautiful and reminded me of Sammy but she had obviously been mistreated.  The pet shop owner said I could have her for $10 and so I bought my first cat!  However, she became my brother’s cat because she was afraid of women.  It was a couple of years before she would really have much to do with me but I never regretted my decision to make her a part of our family.  She became a mother many times over (the father was the Manx cat) and we eventually kept one of her kittens before we had her spayed.  The three of them lived until they died at very advanced years for cats of their breeds.  The child died only about 3 years ago on the day after Christmas of 2008.

In 2009, we got the dog that we currently have.  I currently have a small Chihuahua dog.  He is a precious little dog.  We rescued him from an animal shelter in Rogers.  He was a very skinny very scared little dog that weighed only about 4 pounds and looked like he might not survive very long.  He was a stray that had been taken to the shelter.  He has one eye that is damaged either through a birth defect or through some sort of injury.  He is also still somewhat timid even after two years with our family.  Loud noises or unusual situations leave him shaking with fear sometimes.  However, he now has a very good life.   He eats and sleeps and follows my mom around the house!  He usually gets whatever meat that we are having for dinner and yogurt and other treats from Mom!   He has a good life now and is loved by everyone in the family!
