I don’t have a whole of secrets. I tend to be a pretty open person. But there are lots of things about me that won’t be on any records a 100 years from now.
I am a romantic at heart! I want the happy ending to the book or movie but I am also a lover of the crime shows and have a pretty realistic attitude about life. There are plenty of bad people and bad things do happen to good people but I choose to focus on the good things. Enough bad things will happen anyway there is no need to give them any more time than necessary!
I am a night owl! I tend to stay up until late at night and then sleep until noon or after if left to my own devices. However, I am an adult with responsibilities so I have to go to bed at least at a somewhat reasonable time so I can get up to go to work!
I love romantic comedy movies but I won’t watch a horror movie! Even the mild ones tend to stay with me and I can’t stop thinking about them forever!
Week #22 – Secrets
Week 22. Secrets. Describe something about yourself that won’t be found on any record 100 years from now.
I remember only a couple of commercials from my childhood: The Oscar Mayer commercials, The Coca Cola commercials with the teach the world to sing song and the Where’s the Beef commercials! As I grew older my favorite commercials were the Beer company commercials with the talking lizards and frogs! I also used to love the Coke commercials with the cute little polar bears. My favorites now are the Cox Cable company commercials with the little blue and white digital guys!
However, in the last few years there have been some pretty stupid commercials! A few of them within the last few years I am not even sure what the commercials were for! I don’t understand if they were for a service, a product, for me to do something or not to do something? I just don’t know!!
Then there are the current crop of commercials that just seem to think the American public is composed of people too stupid to come in out of the rain! For instance, the commercial for the dishwasher pacs that displays a disclaimer that the commercial is a dramatization when it shows a construction crew in the dishwasher cleaning the dishes! Really!! A dramatization!! Who would think that!!
Week #21 – Commercials
Week 21. Commercials. Do you remember any commercial jingles from your childhood? Share them here.
My family has not been one for famous people. I was in the newspaper a couple of times for a scholarship I received in high school. My uncle was in the newspaper when he went into military service.
However, my grandparents and others were frequently mentioned in the Madison County Record newspaper for everything from visiting someone for dinner to taking a trip!
Other than these things, none of my family has really been in the paper much! We are a pretty ordinary family with no really famous people but given the problems of fame today I am not sure that is such a bad thing!!
Week #20 – Fame
Week 20. Fame. Tell us about any local brushes with fame. Were you ever in the newspaper? Why? You may also describe any press mentions of your family members.
When I was a kid and until I went to college actually, I shared a room with my sister. We had twin beds, chests and toys when we were little. We had a little corner of our room devoted to our Barbie home! We spent many many hours in our bedroom playing with those Barbie dolls!
For one memorable weekend, there were also stripes of black tape across the room when we were fighting! Then we finally realized that one of us was able to get to our clothes but the other was the only one who could get to the door! We made up and then the room went back to normal!
I don’t really remember any special decorations. We had the usual teenage posters of the teen actors and singers but I don’t really remember which ones. Our beds did usually have matching bedspreads.
Our room was usually messy! In fact one of my most memorable moments is one day when I was about 9 or 10 and my sister was about 7 or 8 and were sent to our room to clean it. We had been in there for a while “cleaning” our room and my sister went to get Dad to check her side because she was finished. Dad came in and took one look and told her she needed to finish cleaning her side that she wasn’t done. She looked up at him with her puppy-dog brown eyes and said “What’s wrong with it, Daddy?” I could see the smoke coming out of his ears! He just turned around and left the room! Mom came in a few minutes later and explained that my sister should really remove the giant pile of clothes from the floor of the closet and hang them up if they were clean or take them to the dirty clothes! Then, she should clean all the toys she had shoved under her bed and piled beside it and put them in the toy bins! My sister got her payback last year though when her soon with the same puppy-dog eyes looked up at her with his room completely covered in toy and looked up at her and asked what was wrong with it when she told him to clean his room! She just didn’t seem to see why Mom and Dad found that so funny!!
Week 19. Bedroom. Describe your childhood bedroom. What furniture did it contain? Were there curtains, wallpaper or paint? Was it messy or clean? Did you share a room with your siblings?
I have had pets for most of my life and both sets of grandparents had pets when I was a child. Both sets of grandparents in fact had Chihuahuas! My dad’s parents had a which Chihuahua called Tiger that I have written of before that they kept until he was very old and very ill and had to be euthanized. My mom’s parents had a Chihuahua called Tiny that lived in the back yard in a little dog house that I jumped off of spraining my ankle when I was about 5 years old.
My first pet that I remember well was a Siamese cat named Sammy. She was a beautiful cat who ruled our household for many years! My funniest memory of her is one weekend when we lived in Green Forest and my mom’s parents came to visit. Grandma was in the living room and was very surprised when the ceramic cat on top of the TV suddenly got up and jumped from the TV! Grandma Treat screamed in surprise and Mom came running into the room to find out what was wrong! Sammy was just looking around like she was wondering what all the noise was about and by that time Grandma was feeling a little silly. Sammy loved to curl up on the TV for hours at a time but she was also a very affectionate cat! We had her for over ten years until she got feline leukemia and died. I still think about her often.
We also had a few hamsters and fish when we were kids. My hamster would continually get out of his cage and we would come in and find Sammy on top of the cage looking around and meowing at us like she was saying would you please get that overgrown mouse back in his cage!!
Later, when I was a teenager, we had just gotten a cute little yellow and white Manx kitten when Dad stopped to go into Radio Shack on Sunset in Springdale. I went into the pet store next door to get something for our fish tank and found this beautiful Siamese cat roaming the store. She was so beautiful and reminded me of Sammy but she had obviously been mistreated. The pet shop owner said I could have her for $10 and so I bought my first cat! However, she became my brother’s cat because she was afraid of women. It was a couple of years before she would really have much to do with me but I never regretted my decision to make her a part of our family. She became a mother many times over (the father was the Manx cat) and we eventually kept one of her kittens before we had her spayed. The three of them lived until they died at very advanced years for cats of their breeds. The child died only about 3 years ago on the day after Christmas of 2008.
In 2009, we got the dog that we currently have. I currently have a small Chihuahua dog. He is a precious little dog. We rescued him from an animal shelter in Rogers. He was a very skinny very scared little dog that weighed only about 4 pounds and looked like he might not survive very long. He was a stray that had been taken to the shelter. He has one eye that is damaged either through a birth defect or through some sort of injury. He is also still somewhat timid even after two years with our family. Loud noises or unusual situations leave him shaking with fear sometimes. However, he now has a very good life. He eats and sleeps and follows my mom around the house! He usually gets whatever meat that we are having for dinner and yogurt and other treats from Mom! He has a good life now and is loved by everyone in the family!
Week #17 – Pets
Week 17. Pets. Did you have any pets as a child? If so, what types and what were their names. Do you have pets now? Describe them as well. If you did not have pets, you can discuss those of neighbors or other family members.
This challenge runs from Saturday, April 23, 2011 through Friday, April 29, 2011.
